Origin of name Iris – Agia Rais (St Rais)

Although Iris derives from the homonym ancient Greek name and word, for the Greek Orthodox Church  the name is associated with a woman named Rais or Irais.

She was born in Egypt, daughter of a man named Peter. At the age of 12 she became a nun. One day, when she went to the spring to bring water she saw many Christians that were arrested by the Emperor Lucian. Rais (or Irais) approached these people although she was advised not to, so as not to be in danger.

Rais did not leave; she even spitted against the guards who arrested her as well.  The guards tortured her and decapitated her. The Greek Orthodox Church named her a Saint celebrating her memory on the nameday of Iris on September 23rd.
