Minas is included in the Greek Orthodox Calendar due to a man, Minas, who was born in Egypt in the mid 3rd century AD.

His parents were pagans but the environment in which he grew up did not affect his mind and heart that followed the Christian religion.

When he was still an adolescent, Minas became a Christian.

When he became an adult he went to the Roman Army in the cavalry. However, the anti-Christian persecutions were quite harsh, especially during Maximianus’ and Diocletian’s era.

Minas left the army and became a hermit on the mountains. He was found by General Pyrros who was touched by the strength of Minas’ faith, so he tried to persuade him to change his faith so as to save his life.

Minas refused so he was sent to the prison and was tortured. After many more efforts and tortures Minas was decapitated.

The Church declared him a saint (Saint Minas – Agios Minas in Greek) and celebrates the nameday of Minas on November 11th.

Agios Minas is the patron Saint of Heraklion in Crete, Greece.
