Paris is not a name included in the Greek orthodox calendar but its significance in ancient Greek mythology and history is immense.

Paris was the son of King Priam of  Troy and Queen Hecuba. Hecuba had a dream about the great trouble her unborn child would cause, so when he was born, she left the baby exposed on Mt. Ida. Normally the baby would die, but Paris was quite lucky. He was suckled by a she-bear, and then raised by a local shepherd.

Paris became a very good looking young man and was chosen by the three Goddesses, Aphrodite, Hera and Athena to choose the most beautiful among them.

Paris chose Aphrodite, who promised him the most beautiful woman on earth, who was Helen, Queen of Sparta, wife of Menelaus of Sparta. Paris took Helen with him when visited Sparta and the Greeks declared war against Troy to claim Helen and pay back the insult made by Paris. Indeed, the Trojan War started and lasted 10 years.

Paris was the one who killed the mighty Achilles, since Aphrodite revealed him Achilles’ secret: the weak spot at his heel. Troy was later destroyed and the dream of Hecuba came true.
