Origin of Name Mirto – Panagia Mirtidiotissa
Mirto is a name that derives from the word myrtle, however for the Greek orthodox Church the name is associated with Virgin Mary.
According to the tradition of the Church, Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherd on the island of Kithira, 40 days after she had passed away and she told him where to find an icon. Indeed, the shepherd found the icon of Virgin Mary underneath a myrtle tree.
The shepherd took the icon home, but next morning it was missing. He went back to the myrtle tree and saw the icon there. Again he took it home but again the same thing happened. For a third time, the shepherd took the icon home but the icon disappeared again. It was obvious then that the icon had to stay where it was found.
A small church was built at the place where the icon was found, next to the myrtle tree. The Church was called Panagia Mirtidiotissa ( since in Greece we call Virgin Mary as “Panagia”). The Greek Orthodox Church celebrates the name Mirto and Mirtidiotissa on the day when the icon was found, on September 24th.
