Origin of name Theoni – Agios Theonas

Since name Theoni is the female respective of Theonas, it is associated with this man, who helped the bishop Theopemptos during the reign of Diocletian.

The emperor Diocletian signed an order for the persecution of Christians in 303AD. One of the first people who declared their faith to Christ was the bishop Theopemptos, although he knew what he would expect.

Indeed, he went through a series of tortures that were combined with miracles. First of all he was put in an oven to burn him, but miraculously he came out safe and sound. Later, he was given poison to drink, but again he was saved by God.

When his persecutors saw that all these tortures were pointless, they decapitated him. Again though, a miracle happened: Theonas, a pagan who was selling drugs and medications, was touched by the strength of Theopemptos’ faith and believed in God.

Theonas used his medication to heal Theopemptos, and managed to save him. However, the pagans buried both men alive.

The Orthodox Church declared both men saints and celebrates the nameday of Theonas on January 5th along with the nameday of Theopemptos.
